What Is the Superhuman Protocol?
The Superhuman Protocol is a three-step therapeutic sequence developed by Gary Brecka, an American human biologist and longevity researcher whose work has gained considerable attention across the health and performance world. The protocol brings together three well-established, independently researched therapies — Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy, Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy, and Red Light therapy — and delivers them in a specific order designed to achieve something that none of the three can accomplish alone.
The thinking behind it is elegant in its simplicity. Each step prepares the body for the next. The result, according to both the published science and the growing number of people who have experienced it, is a depth of cellular recovery and renewal that has to be felt to be properly understood.
At Nour Wellness Hub in Stirling, we are proud to be the only clinic in Forth Valley offering the complete Superhuman Protocol, with all three therapies available in a single session, in the correct sequence, exactly as the protocol requires.
Who Is Gary Brecka?
Gary Brecka is a human biologist with over two decades of experience working at the intersection of genetics, physiology, and human performance. He co-founded 10X Health System and has worked extensively with elite athletes, high-performing executives, and individuals recovering from serious illness. In recent years his work has reached a wider public audience through The Ultimate Human podcast and numerous media appearances.
What distinguishes Gary Brecka's approach is his insistence on understanding the root cause of physical and cognitive decline rather than managing its symptoms. The Superhuman Protocol emerged from his observation that PEMF, HBOT, and Red Light therapy, when combined in the right order, create a synergistic cellular environment that is far more powerful than the sum of its parts.
He describes it as giving the human cell everything it needs at the same time: the right electrical charge, the right fuel, and the right activation signal. In that sequence, the body's own repair mechanisms can operate at a level most people have never experienced.
The Three Steps of the Superhuman Protocol
Step One: PEMF Therapy
The protocol begins with Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. PEMF uses low-frequency electromagnetic pulses that closely mirror the Earth's own natural electromagnetic field, specifically the Schumann Resonance at 7.83 hertz. This is the frequency our bodies evolved alongside over millions of years, and one that modern urban life has largely removed us from.
At a cellular level, PEMF works by restoring the electrical charge of red blood cells. Healthy red blood cells carry a negative charge that causes them to repel one another, keeping them separated and able to carry the maximum possible amount of oxygen. Over time, through stress, poor nutrition, environmental toxins, and the natural process of ageing, this charge degrades. Red blood cells begin to clump together and their oxygen-carrying capacity falls significantly.
PEMF reverses this process. By restoring that electrical charge, it separates the red blood cells and prepares them to absorb and transport oxygen with maximum efficiency. This is not merely a theoretical benefit. It is the essential preparation that makes the second step of the protocol so profoundly effective.
Beyond its role in the protocol, PEMF has decades of peer-reviewed evidence supporting its use for pain relief, bone healing, reduced inflammation, improved sleep, and enhanced nerve function. It was the first electromagnetic therapy to receive FDA approval, and it remains one of the most extensively studied non-pharmacological therapies in modern medicine.

Step Two: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
With the red blood cells now electrically restored and fully separated by the PEMF session, the body is in an optimal state to receive the second step: Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy. The client moves into the hyperbaric chamber, where they breathe 95 to 100 per cent pure oxygen at a pressure slightly above atmospheric normal.
Under these conditions, something remarkable happens. Ordinarily, oxygen is transported through the body almost exclusively by haemoglobin in the red blood cells. Under hyperbaric pressure, however, oxygen dissolves directly into the plasma, the cerebrospinal fluid, the lymphatic system, and every other fluid in the body. It reaches tissues that normal circulation cannot adequately supply: inflamed joints, healing wounds, oxygen-starved regions of the brain, and areas of chronic damage where poor circulation has long been a barrier to recovery.
Because the PEMF session has already primed the red blood cells to carry maximum oxygen, the uptake during HBOT is far greater than it would otherwise be. The tissues are flooded with oxygen at a level that simply cannot be achieved through normal breathing, regardless of how healthy the individual is.
The clinical evidence for HBOT is substantial. A landmark study published in Nature Communications in 2022 demonstrated that HBOT significantly improved Long COVID symptoms, with neuroimaging confirming measurable improvements in brain connectivity and structure. A widely cited Israeli study published in the journal Aging showed that HBOT can lengthen telomeres and clear senescent cells, effectively reversing biological markers of ageing. For stroke recovery, the work of Professor Shai Efrati and his colleagues has demonstrated neurological improvements in patients treated years after their initial event, in areas of the brain previously considered permanently damaged.

Step Three: Red Light Therapy
The final step takes place while the body's tissues are still saturated with the oxygen delivered during HBOT. Full-body Red Light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, exposes the body to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light: typically red light at around 630 to 670 nanometres, and near-infrared light at 810 to 850 nanometres. These wavelengths penetrate deep into tissue and are absorbed by a protein called Cytochrome C Oxidase within the mitochondria of every cell.
The mitochondria are the energy-generating structures inside each cell. When they absorb red and near-infrared light, they produce ATP, the fundamental currency of cellular energy, at a significantly increased rate. In practical terms, this means the cells have both the fuel they need, in the form of oxygen from the HBOT step, and the activation signal they need, in the form of photonic energy from the red light, to carry out repair, regeneration, and renewal at the deepest biological level.
Gary Brecka describes this final step as lighting the fire in freshly laid and carefully prepared kindling. The conditions are perfect. The light provides the spark.
The evidence base for red light therapy is extensive and growing. It spans skin health and anti-ageing, thyroid function, neuropathy, hair loss, joint inflammation, mental health, and cognitive performance. A study published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery demonstrated a 36 per cent reduction in wrinkles after a course of red light treatment. A remarkable trial by Höfling and colleagues showed that red and near-infrared light applied to the thyroid gland in patients with Hashimoto's disease reduced their requirement for levothyroxine by 47 per cent.

Why the Order Matters
Many clinics now offer one or two of these therapies. Some offer all three. But very few deliver them in the correct sequence, and the sequence is what makes the Superhuman Protocol genuinely different from simply booking three separate appointments.
PEMF prepares the blood. HBOT saturates the prepared blood and tissues with oxygen. Red Light activates the mitochondria in freshly oxygenated cells. Each step creates the precise biological conditions that allow the next to work at its maximum potential. Reversing the order, or leaving gaps of hours or days between sessions, significantly reduces the synergistic benefit.
This is why, at Nour Wellness Hub, we have invested in all three systems and ensure that every Superhuman Protocol session delivers each therapy in sequence, within a single visit. It is the only way to honour the integrity of the protocol and give our clients the full benefit of what the science supports.
Conditions the Superhuman Protocol Can Help With
Because the Superhuman Protocol works at the level of cellular biology, its benefits extend across a remarkably wide range of conditions. The three therapies it combines have each been studied independently across dozens of clinical areas. When delivered together in sequence, their effects compound. What follows is a comprehensive overview of the conditions for which peer-reviewed evidence exists, organised by category.
Brain Health and Neurological Conditions
There is a growing and compelling body of research supporting the use of these therapies for brain health. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases blood flow to regions of the brain that have become oxygen-deprived, which is a central feature of many neurological conditions. Transcranial near-infrared light, delivered through the skull during red light therapy, reduces neuroinflammation, stimulates the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and supports the formation of new neural connections. PEMF at earth-resonance frequencies has demonstrated improvements in neuroplasticity and cognitive function in clinical trials.
For people experiencing brain fog, memory difficulties, or early cognitive decline, these mechanisms translate into measurable improvements in clarity, recall, and executive function. For those living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, published studies show reductions in amyloid burden and improvements in cerebral perfusion. For Parkinson's disease, near-infrared light has been shown to protect the dopaminergic neurons that the condition progressively destroys.
The evidence for PTSD and trauma is particularly striking. Military-funded research in the United States has demonstrated that HBOT restores normal blood flow to the brain regions involved in processing traumatic memory, with significant reductions in PTSD symptom severity. Transcranial photobiomodulation adds further benefit by modulating the prefrontal cortex and supporting emotional regulation. Clients who have experienced trauma often describe a profound shift in their sense of ease and calm after a course of sessions.
For those recovering from stroke, the landmark work of Professor Efrati and his colleagues, published in PLOS ONE and Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience, demonstrated that HBOT produced measurable neurological improvements in patients treated years after their initial event, including improvements in motor function and cognition in areas previously believed to be permanently damaged.
Concussion and traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and post-surgical cognitive effects all have relevant published evidence supporting one or more components of the protocol.
Musculoskeletal and Pain Conditions
Chronic pain is one of the areas where clients most consistently notice rapid and significant benefit from the Superhuman Protocol. The three therapies address pain through complementary mechanisms. Red light reduces inflammatory cytokines and modulates pain neurotransmitter pathways directly. PEMF reduces nerve root inflammation and has well-established evidence for its use in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, including a Cochrane-reviewed meta-analysis showing a 70 per cent reduction in pain and morning stiffness. HBOT reduces central sensitisation, the process by which the nervous system becomes chronically amplified in its perception of pain.
For fibromyalgia specifically, a landmark randomised controlled trial by Efrati and colleagues, published in PLOS ONE in 2015, demonstrated that HBOT produced measurable normalisation of brain abnormalities on SPECT imaging alongside dramatic reductions in pain scores. This was a pivotal study because it confirmed that fibromyalgia has a neurological basis that responds to oxygen-based treatment.
For those recovering from sports injuries or surgery, the protocol accelerates healing of tendons, ligaments, and muscle tissue while reducing swelling and the formation of scar tissue. Elite sports teams across the UK and Europe now use combinations of these therapies as standard recovery protocols, and there is substantial published evidence from the Journal of Applied Physiology and Lasers in Medical Science supporting their use in athletic performance and recovery.
Osteoporosis, neuropathy, and chronic back pain all have relevant evidence across the three therapies. In the case of osteoporosis, PEMF has FDA clearance for bone healing and has been shown in clinical trials to produce measurable increases in bone mineral density over twelve-month treatment courses.
Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health
Red light therapy increases the production of nitric oxide in the endothelium, the lining of blood vessels. Nitric oxide causes blood vessels to dilate, improving circulation and reducing blood pressure. HBOT promotes angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, in tissues where circulation has been compromised. PEMF improves microcirculation and reduces the tendency of platelets to aggregate abnormally. Together, these three mechanisms make the Superhuman Protocol a genuinely powerful tool for cardiovascular health.
For people managing diabetes, the evidence is extensive. Red light therapy improves insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function. HBOT has Cochrane-confirmed evidence for improving wound healing in diabetic foot complications and reducing amputation risk. PEMF addresses diabetic neuropathy directly. The protocol does not replace medical management of diabetes, but there is a strong case for it as a complementary approach that addresses multiple aspects of the condition simultaneously.
For weight management and metabolic syndrome, red light at 635 nanometres has been shown in clinical trials to promote the release of fat from adipocytes, producing measurable reductions in body circumference. All three therapies support healthy mitochondrial energy metabolism, which is the foundation of a well-functioning metabolic system.
Energy, Fatigue and Immune Function
Perhaps no group of people stand to benefit more immediately from the Superhuman Protocol than those living with chronic fatigue conditions. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or ME/CFS, is characterised at its cellular root by mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired energy production. The protocol addresses this directly: red light stimulates ATP production in the mitochondria, HBOT restores oxygen to tissues that have been functionally starved of it, and PEMF restores the electrical environment in which cells operate at their best.
For Long COVID, the evidence is now substantial. A 2022 randomised controlled trial published in Nature Communications demonstrated that HBOT significantly improved energy levels, cognitive function, sleep quality, and pain in Long COVID patients, with MRI neuroimaging confirming structural improvements in brain connectivity. This is one of the most significant studies in recent hyperbaric medicine, and it supports the use of the full Superhuman Protocol for post-viral recovery.
For those whose immune system is under chronic stress, whether from illness, overwork, or persistent inflammation, the protocol supports immune function through multiple pathways. HBOT stimulates white blood cell activity and, over a course of sessions, has been shown to mobilise stem cells from the bone marrow. Red light modulates the cytokine environment. PEMF supports lymphatic drainage and reduces the inflammatory burden on immune tissue.
Hormonal Health and Women's Wellbeing
The menopause transition brings with it a range of challenges that can significantly affect quality of life: disrupted sleep, joint discomfort, mood changes, cognitive shifts, and skin changes, among others. Red light therapy addresses several of these simultaneously. Published research supports its use for reducing hot flushes, improving sleep quality, supporting pelvic floor health, and stimulating collagen production in ageing skin. PEMF supports bone density at a time when oestrogen decline accelerates bone loss. HBOT addresses the cardiovascular risk factors that increase during and after menopause.
For women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis or other thyroid conditions, the evidence from red light therapy is particularly noteworthy. A published randomised controlled trial demonstrated that red and near-infrared light applied directly to the thyroid gland produced a 47 per cent reduction in levothyroxine requirements in Hashimoto's patients over a twelve-week course of treatment. The results were confirmed in follow-up studies and represent one of the most clinically striking findings in photobiomodulation research.
Hair loss, whether related to hormonal shifts, post-illness, or androgenetic alopecia, responds well to red light therapy at 650 nanometres. Multiple randomised controlled trials support its effectiveness, and it has received FDA clearance specifically for hair regrowth in both men and women.
Sleep and Mental Wellbeing
Sleep quality is one of the most frequently reported improvements among people who undergo the Superhuman Protocol regularly. Red light influences the pineal gland and melatonin production through pathways that are entirely different from the blue-light suppression familiar to most people. PEMF at Schumann resonance frequencies has been shown to entrain brainwave activity towards patterns associated with deep, restorative sleep. A published study in the Journal of Athletic Training found that red light treatment significantly improved sleep quality and melatonin levels in elite athletes over a short treatment period.
For anxiety and depression, the combination of transcranial photobiomodulation and PEMF offers a non-pharmacological approach with a growing evidence base. A double-blind randomised controlled trial demonstrated that transcranial near-infrared light produced significant reductions in both depression and anxiety scores over a four-week treatment period. PEMF modulates serotonin and dopamine pathways. HBOT improves perfusion to the limbic system, the emotional regulation centre of the brain.
More broadly, the Superhuman Protocol supports mental wellbeing simply by improving the quality of sleep, reducing inflammation, and restoring cellular energy. When the body functions well at a biological level, mood, resilience, and sense of self tend to follow.
Respiratory Health, Wound Healing and Other Conditions
HBOT has long-established clinical evidence for the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, radiation-induced tissue injury, and refractory osteomyelitis. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews confirms its effectiveness in these areas, and it is used in NHS and military medical settings for these indications. Red light therapy accelerates all phases of wound healing through fibroblast activation and collagen synthesis. PEMF reduces post-surgical oedema and speeds tissue repair.
For people who have received radiotherapy and are living with radiation-induced tissue damage, HBOT is the most evidence-based intervention available. It promotes angiogenesis in radiation-damaged tissue and is an established treatment for osteoradionecrosis of the jaw, radiation proctitis, and radiation cystitis. Red light, supported by MASCC clinical guidelines, reduces mucositis and dermatitis associated with cancer treatment.
For sudden sensorineural hearing loss, HBOT is recommended within three months of onset by multiple clinical guidelines. For tinnitus, transcranial near-infrared light has shown reductions in perceived loudness through cochlear regeneration mechanisms.
What to Expect During a Session at Nour Wellness Hub
A complete Superhuman Protocol session takes between sixty and ninety minutes. You begin with approximately twenty to thirty minutes on the PEMF mat, lying comfortably as the electromagnetic pulses work at a cellular level. Most people find this deeply relaxing, often describing a sense of warmth and calm that makes it one of the more pleasant ways to begin a therapy session.
You then move into the hyperbaric oxygen chamber for thirty to sixty minutes. The pressure increases gradually, producing a sensation similar to descending in an aircraft. You breathe normally throughout. Clients typically read, listen to music, or simply rest. It is comfortable, quiet, and gentle.
The session concludes with ten to twenty minutes in the full-body red light pod, which delivers therapeutic wavelengths of red and near-infrared light across the whole body simultaneously. The warmth is pleasant, and many clients describe an immediate sense of ease and energy in the minutes and hours that follow.
